The Organ

The OrganThe organ was built in 1976 by Hendrik ten Bruggencate at a cost of £8660.

The design was inspired by the work of the Swiss firm Metzler, with whom ten Bruggencate had worked. The specification is modest and was designed for the accompaniment of straightforward liturgical music and responsorial psalms.

Given that the Cathedral has begun to re-establish a choral tradition, this organ is now proving to be inadequate for the demands of made upon it, and it is developing fundamental faults due to age and the poor execution of the original design. The Cathedral is hopeful that the situation will be addressed in the not too distant future.
